Why was Laura late the evening we invited her to dine at a pub? Why did she keep Husband and me waiting?

Here are the facts she gave to us, much later than the events: Laura had sped into the courtyard to keep apace with the beat of her racing heart, because she knew we waited. She had been at the Mr Big I Am’s house, with the man himself.

That was bad. And this was worse:

She was late because she had waited for Husband and me to leave our house. She had watched our car drive away to meet her. She had entered our house, our home, and helped herself to what she needed.

The thank you she gave for taking her out, for paying for her meal, for buying her wine, for letting her share our company.

The thank you she gave for trusting her with a key to our home.

The thank you she gave for supporting her always.

She had said she called at my home for gift wrap, and knew I had some.

We had no reason to doubt back then. My house key still belonged to her.

Much later, when we were much wiser we demanded the key to our house, our home, be given back for good.
