What happened on that lost weekend? The weekend we lost contact with our daughter. We had tasted the image of death for this: Laura was with New Man. The sort of man who would make Mr Big I Am jealous.

New Man had the looks, the career, the money. He was kind and thoughtful. He had interests that Laura might enjoy. Oh, and he had a girlfriend, a long-standing one at that.

He had taken Laura away for the lost weekend in his sports car, to a fancy hotel, in the city. Mr Big I Am style. Why Laura could not have told us this, I do not know. There must have been drama, there must have been a show. Maybe Mr Big I Am was involved. I do not know.

New Man wanted a secret liaison with Laura, to see how their relationship developed. Laura wanted to parade the courtship to catch Mr Big I Am’s eye.

New Man came around to Laura’s house on visits for a couple of months. He doted on her. He worried about leaving his girlfriend, said she was a wreck. Laura did not care, fine by her, that New Man was committed he had done his job. The dalliance had brought Mr Big I Am back to her.

Laura ended the relationship with New Man who was not perfect, but was better than this: Better than Mr Big I Am.

She gave me the gifts New Man had showered her with.

I am the mother of two adult daughters, both much loved and cared for. The eldest thought she could handle social drinking and party drugs, she could not. There is a journey addicts relate to - their journey. As a mother I have healed through the written word. This is my journey.
